U.S. Rig Counts
For the week ending February 17, 2012 the total U.S. rotary rig count was 1,994 up 5 rigs from the previous week. Compared to last year, there were an additional 287 rigs drilling for oil & gas, a net increase of 16.8 % year over year.
Canadian Rig Counts
For the week ending February 17, 2012 the total Canadian rotary rig count was 705 down 4 rigs from the previous week. Compared to last year, there were an additional 80 rigs drilling for oil & gas, a net increase of 12.8 % year over year.
International Rig Counts
For the period ending January 01, 2012 the total international rotary rig count was 1,171 down 9 rigs from the previous week. Compared to last year, there were -18 fewer rigs drilling for oil & gas, a net decrease of -1.5% year over year.

Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944, when Hughes Tool Company began weekly counts of US and Canadian drilling activity. Hughes initiated the monthly international rig count in 1975.
